Statement

My studio work is deeply influenced by implementing everyday walking practices and various methods of outdoor exploration. As I document real landscapes and places through photography, drawing, and note taking, I gravitate towards geographies and landforms that exude certain types of mysterious energies. The locations that I explore contain real layers of truth and natural histories in the strata, however, for me, these environmental layers also hold the spirits, the dreams, and an otherworldliness that is sensed but not immediately seen.

From these explorations and documentations of place, I create drawings, paintings, and prints as an attempt to capture and combine real and surreal situations. I am interested in ways to summon the marvelous from a landscape…to pull it out from the ground below. I merge imagery found at real locations and places with my own personal memories, constructed visions, imagined dream scapes, and experiences of déjà vu. I want my work to seem inviting and familiar, but at the same time, unnerving and questionable. To be believable and unbelievable at the same time.
